Paediatric Pint of Science – 6 October

Paediatric Pint of Science logoWe are excited to announce our next Pint of Paediatric Science (POPS) meeting for  6th October 2020, 18:30 – 20:00 (all welcome with their own food and drink!).

These meetings are designed to encourage all Paediatric trainees as well as medical students, foundation trainees, clinical academics and senior clinicians to network, engage and help bridge the gap between clinical work and academia. They should also help in giving you ideas towards CV-building and considering other avenues within your vocation.

Title:  Shining Light on the Newborn Brain

Speaker: Prof Topun Austin, Consultant Neonatologist in Cambridge and Honorary Professor of Neurophotonics at University College London.

Background:

Prof Topun Austin is a Neonatal Consultant and Lead of the Evelyn Perinatal Imaging Centre (EPIC), based at the Rosie Hospital, Cambridge. The centre has a dedicated infant functional brain imaging unit and also houses a 1.5T MRI scanner for mothers and babies. The research interests of the group are in the development of monitoring and imaging technologies to identify vulnerable infants at an early stage.

He also leads neoLAB, a formal collaborative group between EPIC and the Biomedical Optics Laboratory at UCL. The group has been involved in developing an integrated optical-EEG system to study neurovascular coupling as well as a unique fast optical tomography system for 3D imaging of regional blood flow and oxygenation. He is also involved in the development of the NeuroNICU at the Rosie Hospital”

Title: How to… get published

Speaker: Dr Kai Hensel, Consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology

 

Background:

Dr Kai Hensel has completed a PhD investigating epigenetic signatures in hepatitis B virus infection and an MD in clinical studies using advanced echocardiography techniques to detect subclinical heart disease in primarily non-cardiac conditions such as IBD and diabetes. He has published extensively and has won several research awards and he is on the advisory board of the German/Austrian/Swiss Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. He was a consultant in paediatric gastroenterology at CUH for 2 years and has recently moved on to extend his spectrum toward neonatology at Göttingen University Medical Centre.
