Several of our faculty have been promoted to clinical professor in the most recent Academic Career Pathways (Research and Teaching) Scheme 2023. These are Professors Sam Behjati and Matt Zilbauer.

Matt’s research has focused on inflammatory bowel disease in children, which has shown an alarming increase in prevalence especially in younger patients. He’s created a unique biobank of organoid samples from paediatric patients and has used transcriptomic and epigenetic approaches to understand the pathogenesis of this devastating disorder. His laboratory recently relocated to the Wellcome MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute.

Sam Behjati is a junior group leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and consultant in paediatric oncology. His research has helped to define the ontogeny of paediatric cancers, meaning defining the cell of origin and also historical acquisition of driver mutations resulting in paediatric solid cancers. He is now also helping to improve access to whole genome sequencing diagnosis for paediatric solid and liquid tumours.
